The Year of the Ox

We spent the Chinese New Year in Beijing (where else?!). Last year we went to Shanghai and it was pretty much closed for the week and Beijing was very quiet too - quiet, that is, until New Year's Eve when a million firecrackers were let off and the sky lit up with red fireworks. It went on for hours but we didn't watch it all!

Our hotel was lovely and as it was so quiet we had the facilities to ourselves. The pool was delicious and the Spa even more so. The massage Dave and I had together was something that I think only HE should talk about!!

The following morning we were greeted by the Lion Dance and firecrackers in the hotel itself. Lots of noise and colour - quite a spectacle all before 9 am!
Later that day, Dave and I visited Houhai Park and took part in some of the fun. The lake was frozen solid and people were skating, playing ice hockey and sledging on it. We pushed to the front of the queue, Chinese style, and took our place on the ice - what a scream! Great fun followed by a wonderful treat - a lovely meal in an unlikely Vietnamese Restaurant.
Later this month (Feb) we are back in the UK for a flying visit and hope to look up a few friends along the way if the snow disappears in time! It is colder in London at the moment than it is here in Tianjin!
